Partner

According to Chambers & Partners 2016, Feyzi Erçin is "one of Turkish shipping's outstanding practitioners, noted for his "trustworthy, thorough and pleasant" nature, and his "significant commercial understanding, and effectiveness at explaining the intricacies of the Turkish legal system."

Feyzi Erçin was born in 1970, in Istanbul. He received his licence from the Istanbul University Law Faculty in 1993 and started his internship. Feyzi became an associate in 1995 and subsequently had training experience at a London law firm in 1999. He became a partner in a major transport law firm in January 2000. Since then, he has specialised as aviation and shipping lawyer.

As Erçin Bilgin Bektaşoğlu was set up, he was recognized in the 2011 edition of the Legal 500 as an aviation practitioner with an “excellent reputation”. The latest 2016 edition highlighted his setting "the standard for the firm, and makes excellent use of his connections throughout Turkey".

Feyzi Erçin is handling two of the major aviation losses in Turkey in the last decade; Turkish Airlines' total loss in Diyarbakir, as well as the Atlasjet total loss in Isparta, both on behalf of British and American reinsurers. He has been a speaker at the IATA Legal Symposium, which he regularly attends. Feyzi continuously advises insurers and reinsurers on coverage and litigation of aviation matters. The last years has seen a significant increase in his general aviation cases. He is currently handling several small aircraft and helicopter crash losses too.

On the shipping side, he has been involved in the investigation and handling of significant marine casualties, involving total losses, collisions, major oilspills and piracy, with particularly high level of expertise in salvage. He represents various UK and Scandinavian P&I Clubs and has extensive defence experience in admiralty matters. In addition, he has experience on cargo claims, bills of lading and charterparty disputes, providing legal opinions to foreign litigations.

Insurance is another area he focuses on. He is advising a local underwriter on their first major D&O liability coverage and has advised various London law firms on coverage disputes between the Reinsurers and the Cedant. Feyzi is also handling a large scale international fraud litigation, as well as a major Turkish arbitration for a major Austrian energy corporation. His Clients include P&I Clubs, shipowners, charterers and underwriters.
